We do have choices but they are limited. Alot of us use Firefox and I also use Thunderbird for email. Both excellent products.
IBM has many patents as well.
We just have to pick and choose what we need and what works for us.
Some people often neglect the fact that MS has put thoudands of puters in classrooms, self serving for sure.
Apple did the same for a goodly period of time.
Gates has also spent Billions on philanthropy. The lates being a 250m grant last week.
He is the devil in many respects but there is some good that comes out of Redmond.

Actually MS has made some progress on various fronts concerning patents and email.
Email began far earlier than MS has been around. thre protocols have evolved thru the years.
Originally email was only available to people who had access to the arpanet.
