Most other companies have woken up and rid themselves of pensions along time ago, realizing that they(pensions) were just a set-up for failure in the long run. Since they are unionized, they can't just give them up. They're nuts are in a grinder. Unions need to be either totally rethought, or altogether removed from our market driven society. It's not like this is 1850, and one company in New York holds a monopoly building skyscrapers. Where they could get away with hiring Irish immigrants, making them work 12 hour days, paying them shit, and if they died on the job ... just say "oh well, he was just a stupid mic"(or whatever the racial slur for Irishmen was). There is way too much competition in business for companies to succeed while unions are telling them what to do. Add our government telling them what to do as well, and right there are the two main reasons for their troubles. I don't think my car is junk, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. All that being said, let them go under. I don't think anyone should ever be bailed out. Let them learn from past mistakes and give someone else an opportunity to step in and do it better. |

Btw, "Depression" is misspelled in the title of this thread.

| *EL's Epic Slammy List* | "You'd better get it straight that it's not a bunch of boy scouts you're up against -- then you'll know that this is not the age for beautiful gestures. We're after power and we mean it. Your fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you'd better get wise to it. There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers -- and then you cash in on guilt. Now that's the system...that's the game, and once you understand it, you'll be easier to deal with." - Ayn Rand |

Unions don't tell companies what to do. Unions negotiate wage/compensation packages and basic work rules(don't touch the breaker box if you're not an electrician, e.g.), but other than that, companies are really on their own to screw up as they please. As I mentioned before, Detroit was raking in tons of cash during the 90s and didn't invest any of it(that's marketable, at least) in new technology. They blew away ten years of good money and have nothing to show for it. That doesn't mean they don't need the bailout, which I support. Waaay too many jobs at risk all across the country. I think Detroit is capable of competing with the best(CTS, Vette, Malibu,Cobalt SS, e.g.), but they need a leg up until the economy sorts itself out. |

Yeah, about as stupid as AIG's "seminars", aka beer blasts. |

If unions are unwilling to renegotiate, that is telling them what to do. |

So what happens if GM does lay off 2.6 million or whatever the number it is that is being thrown around? Does this help the $750 billion bail out of the banks? No, it will further hurt them because now the GM employees won't be able to pay for their house. So do we want to throw out another $25 billion to save the american auto makers or let them go down the drain along with the money to bail out the banks. This money is nothing when we are trillions of dollars in debt because of the current administration. It is all fun and games to make wars with other countries until you get the 3 trillion dollar bill http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/07/AR2008030702846.html. It makes absolutely no sense that $25 billion is so much money when $3 trillion will end up being spent on BS wars. So what Obama gets to walk into will be trillions in debt, a failing economy, automakers who might be gone by the time he gets in, and a war that cannot be won. So he is pretty much fucked from the get go. In the end it is less than 1% of the population right? So what is another percent in the national unemployment? And no one looks at the pressure that the automakers are having to lower emissions and increase MPG. And it is not just a push from consumers to have fuel efficient cars it is government mandated stuff. By 2020 which is a little over 11 years away the combined fleet of cars will need to be an average of 35 MPG. That is pretty much a complete redesign of the current cars or new very high efficient cars to offset the gap. So there has to be increased R&D costs to design new technology to achieve the MPG needed. And not only do they have to increase MPG but also they have to decrease the CO2 emissions. The auto makers are pretty much doomed without the support of the government. And not only U.S. automakers but any of them that want to sell here. Eventually only 1 automaker will survive and make a crappy car for a high price and you have to put up with it because the government thought it was a good idea to make the auto industry a monopoly. |

As in telling management to go fuck themselves? Happens all the time, in all union/management relationships. Eventually both sides will come back to the bargaining table because it's in the best interest of both parties. |

i'm still against the bail-out , but i'm however for the idea of forcing them to file chapter 11 and helping them restructure their business deals so they can atleast be competitive against the import market. |

You can not use the argument about government mandated standards to get the Big 3 out of this. Other companies make cars within the US that meet those same standards and they are doing fine. Under the new laws the Democrats and Obama support, the unions will have all the power. It requires binding arbitration after three months of negotiation and allows strong-arm tactics during the original run-up to unionization and removes the ability to have a private individual vote on unionization. Just wait until you see how bad the economy gets with those rules in place. |
