DVD Reviews
The idea behind this thread is simple. Lots of people watch DVDs, movies, downloads, Blu-Ray, whatever.

Basically, give a little review/synopsis of any flick you've recently watched that may be available to us at our local video store, Best-buy, netflix, etc.

Just two rules: 1) NO SPOILERS. Don't ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it. 2) The movie must not currently be in theaters. This is for rent/buy-able movies.

Last movie I got from Netflix was Evan Almighty

Basically followed in the vain of Bruce Almighty, except without the originality or humor. Steve Carrel is called upon, by God, to build an ark. People think he's nuts. Supposed hilarity is to ensue. It did not. I didn't expect much, but I expected more.

Last movie I rented was Rambo. 3.5/5

This movie isn't amazing, and the storyline is pretty thin, but if you take it for what it is, and like violence..you'll love it. Pretty much how it breaks down is, after Rambo warns a buncha dipshits not to go into Burma..some blond chick convinces them to go. They get kidnapped, lulzy rape ensues. Then Rambo, and some other dipshits go in to save everyone.

I think there are something like 2.5 killings a minute in this movie. Which is honestly the best part, I watched it with my sister and she was being all girly and squeamish and shit, meanwhile I was loling at peoples heads exploding. So if you're into watching a single dude basically wipe out an entire fucking army, or find death hella lulzy, this one is for you.

There is some other stuff, about overcoming inner demons and stuff, but it's mostly just the super gruesome death that made this movie pretty badass.

Zodiac

Pretty solid movie. Basically a dramatic retelling of the history of the Zodiac killer. Well done, and despite my disdain for the doofus Jake Gyllenhal (or whatever) I really didn't mind him too much. There isn't a whole lot of gore, so don't expect a horror movie in that sense, it's more of a suspense/thriller type. The guy who played "Lee" was pretty cool, Mark Ruffalo was good as the main detective on the case.

Overall, not a bad way to kill a couple hours, I guess.

(well, more like 3½ but there isn't a ½ star, so meh)

Stigmata

I watched this movie years ago, and recently decided to watch it again. A cinematic juxtaposition of ancient religious dogma with the modern life of the protagonist Frankie. Gabriel Byrne plays a priest-scientist (lol) who investigates the stigmata afflicting Frankie. Interesting, visually decent, and a nice departure from the typical Hollywood script.

In Bruges

4/5 stars

Great movie. Strong cast and great acting. Lots of dark jokes and funny humor. About two hitman sent to the fairy tale town of Bruges after a "job" takes the wrong turn in London. As the film process we see each characters self demons that come with the job of being a hitman. Great movie I highly recommend it.

Very good thread idea. I would add something to it if I could, but I haven't seen enough DVDs lately.

I'm going to work on a couple of movies I've seen in the past couple of weeks.

Untraceable
United 93(forgot I actually had that one)
Running with Scissors

edit, oh, and Goodfellas, just because that movie is completely badass.

I just got it on Blu-ray and it is a fantastic show. It makes me wish I could drink at work.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

I didn't go into this movie with huge expectations, as I had heard some mediocre reviews of it. I was pleasantly surprised. A very interesting, well told story of Robert Ford, the outlaw who kills Jesse James to claim the $10,000 reward offered by Missouri Governor Thomas Crittenden. It covers the time period leading up to the events and through the remainder of Ford's life. Without giving out too much, a well made movie that leaves one feeling, I suppose, sympathy for Jesse James and perhaps a level of disdain and pity for Ford.
